The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government will recruit at least 7,000 teachers to help reduce the shortage of educators across the country.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on April 1, the Minister said the Ghana Education Service (GES) has been directed to open its recruitment portal from April 10, 2026. The process is expected to end by July 1, 2026.
According to him, more than 30,000 teaching positions are currently vacant nationwide, affecting effective teaching and learning in many schools. He explained that the recruitment will focus on trained teachers from the 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 batches.
“Graduates from 2022 to 2025 may apply for placement across the country. Priority will be given to those who are ready and willing to serve in deprived and underserved areas,” he stated.
The Minister assured that the recruitment process will be competitive and transparent. He added that the move also supports government’s plan to decentralize teacher recruitment.
In addition to teacher recruitment, Mr. Iddrisu revealed that universities have been given clearance to recruit 1,200 lecturers to improve staffing at the tertiary level. He noted that the recruitment will be guided by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The Minister further stated that the 2026 national budget has allocated over GH¢39 billion to the education sector, with part of the funds set aside for recruitment.
He expressed confidence that the exercise will ease pressure on schools and improve the quality of education across the country.
