Greater Accra RCC Activates Emergency Measures Ahead of Heavy Rains

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has announced intensified measures to prepare the region for the 2026 rainy season and prevent flooding across flood-prone communities in the capital.

Speaking at a press conference, regional authorities said recent rains have already caused unfortunate incidents and loss of lives in some parts of the region, making it necessary for all agencies and residents to remain alert.

The RCC explained that the situation has become more serious following a weather advisory from the Ghana Meteorological Agency warning of more heavy rains in the coming weeks.

According to the Regional Coordinating Council, preparations are being carried out in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure quick response during emergencies.

Authorities revealed that several interventions are currently ongoing across the region. These include the desilting of drains and gutters, removal of refuse from drainage channels, inspection of waterways, demolition of unauthorized structures blocking water flow, and intensified public education campaigns.

The RCC also directed all MMDAs, especially environmental health officers and NADMO officials, to take immediate steps to reduce the impact of flooding during the rainy season.

Communities identified as flood-prone areas include Kaneshie, Alajo, Odawna, Circle, Weija, Tetegu, Ashalaja, Dansoman, Adabraka, Ashaiman, Tema Communities 1 and 2, Madina, Adenta, Borteyman, Pantang, and Kwabenya.

Emergency response teams at the regional and district levels have also been activated to work closely with the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, and National Ambulance Service to respond quickly during emergencies.

Relief items such as mattresses, blankets, first aid kits, and life jackets have been positioned at strategic locations across the region. Temporary shelters including schools, health facilities, community centers, religious institutions, and government facilities have also been identified to support evacuation efforts when necessary.

Residents living in flood-prone communities have been advised to remain alert and relocate temporarily when needed during periods of heavy rainfall.

The RCC further warned motorists and pedestrians against driving or walking through flooded roads, stressing that several deaths have occurred in similar situations in previous years.

Authorities also announced that the Weija Dam has been opened to release excess water due to rising water levels caused by heavy rains. The Regional Security Council is expected to inspect affected communities to assess the impact on residents and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the RCC disclosed that about 3,000 solar streetlights have been installed across parts of the region in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to improve visibility and safety.

Some of the roads where streetlights have been rehabilitated include Liberation Road, Ring Road East, Independence Avenue, Kanda Highway, Nima Highway, Kaneshie-Mallam Road, George Walker Bush Highway, Spintex Road, Osu Oxford Street, Dansoman High Street, Boundary Road, and several others.

The RCC stated that contractors are still working on faulty streetlights in some areas and assured residents that updates would continue to be provided.

The Coordinating Council also called on all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to remain active on the ground by visiting roads, schools, and markets to ensure the safety of residents.

The RCC finally appealed to the public to avoid dumping refuse into drains and waterways and to cooperate with authorities to help build a safer and flood-resilient Greater Accra.
