Dr. China files nomination to contest NPP General Secretary position

The National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Charles Dwamena, popularly known as Dr. China, has officially filed his nomination to contest the position of National General Secretary ahead of the party’s national executive elections scheduled for October 3, 2026.

Dr Dwamena submitted his nomination at the NPP’s national headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra on Thursday, August 27, 2026, formally setting the stage for his bid to become the party’s next General Secretary.

His filing follows his earlier declaration of intention to contest the position, where he outlined his vision to rebuild the party, restore discipline and strengthen the relationship between the party’s leadership and its grassroots members.

His campaign is anchored on the theme, “Let’s Rebuild to Restore the Love,” with Dr Dwamena arguing that the party needs strong internal structures, unity and greater engagement with its members as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

As National Treasurer, Dr Dwamena has highlighted his record in improving the party’s internally generated funds from membership dues, citing growth from about GH¢100 per month to a current daily average of GH¢30,000 through improved systems, accountability and engagement with members across the country and the diaspora.

He has said his experience in financial management and party administration has strengthened his understanding of the systems required to run the party effectively, and that he intends to bring the same approach to the office of General Secretary if elected.

Dr China has also outlined plans to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures, ensuring that polling stations, electoral areas, constituencies and regional offices are properly resourced and able to function effectively.

Among his proposals are the implementation of welfare programmes for party executives, including the Group Accident Insurance Scheme, Political Mentorship Programme, Business Incubation Fund and Human Resource Empowerment Programme.

He has also proposed a pension scheme for polling station executives as part of efforts to improve the welfare and motivation of party members who contribute to the party’s activities at the grassroots level.

Another major part of his vision is the development of a modern NPP National Headquarters complex, which he says could house the Patriotic Institute, administrative offices, conference facilities and a party museum, while also creating opportunities to generate revenue for the party.

Dr Dwamena has consistently stressed the need for political maturity, decisiveness, credibility and a strong understanding of political and corporate governance in the office of General Secretary.

He has also pledged to work closely with the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and other stakeholders to unite the party and prepare it for the 2028 general elections.

Following the filing of his nomination, Dr Dwamena will now await the vetting process as the party prepares to determine the candidates who will contest the various national executive positions in the October 3 elections.
