J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage Announces Activities to Mark 14th Anniversary of former President Atta Mills
The J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage has officially launched activities to mark the 14th anniversary of the passing of former President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, with a call on Ghanaians to celebrate his legacy of peace, unity and dedicated public service.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, Chairman of the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage, Hon. Alex Segbefia, said the commemoration is intended to honour the life and values of the late President, who remains the only Ghanaian Head of State to have died while in office.
Quoting one of President Mills’ memorable statements, Hon. Segbefia said the late leader was committed to healing divisions and promoting national unity.
“It will be my duty as President to heal wounds and unite our dear nation. I intend to pursue relentlessly all avenues for entrenching peace and unity in all parts of the country.”
He noted that the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage, established in 2021, is a non-profit, non-partisan and independent organisation dedicated to preserving the ideals and leadership of the late President while promoting democratic values and human development.
Hon. Segbefia announced that the anniversary activities began with the press conference on July 15 and will continue with a series of events.
A commemorative lecture will be held on Wednesday, July 22, at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). The lecture will be delivered by renowned cardiothoracic surgeon and former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, on the theme “President John Evans Atta Mills, Fourteen Years On.”
The lecture will be chaired by Ms. Hannah Tetteh, former Minister for Foreign Affairs and current United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Libya.
On Friday, July 24, a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service will take place at Asomdwee Park in Accra. President John Dramani Mahama is expected to lay a wreath on behalf of the Republic of Ghana, while other wreaths will be laid by Parliament, the Mills family, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage and the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.
The activities will conclude on Saturday, July 25, with the President John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Theodosia Okoh National Hockey Pitch in Accra.
Hon. Segbefia encouraged the public and the media to participate fully in the activities to honour the memory of the late President and reflect on the values he stood for.
Several dignitaries attended the launch, including Former Cape Coast Mayor Madam Priscilla Arhin, Nancy Ampofo, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Hon. Emelia Arthur, and Passover Asimenu Yao Jonah (Sir Jonah), an aspirant for the position of Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
